Badge, Southland Pipe BandsAbout this object
This is a Southland Pipe Bands badge from 1938.
The Wyndham Pipe Band was active from 1907, when uniforms were first purchased in the Dress Mackenzie tartan. The Band lent pomp and colour to many events throughout the District, leading parades at Anzac commemorations and A&P shows, as well as New Year's Eve functions and Wyndham Races. The Band entered its first competition in Dunedin in 1911, and for many of the competitors and supporters this was their first visit to Dunedin.
The 50th Jubilee was celebrated in 1957, with a crowd of over 2000 watching more than 350 pipers from 16 bands from throughout the region. The period from 1960-1970 was a time of great strength and interest in the Band, with considerable competition success.
The story of the Band is told in 'The History of the Wyndham Pipe Band 1907-1982' by Bob Henry.
