Boots, Concealed

About this object

This is a pair of boots which were found underneath the floorboards of a house on Alma Street, Wyndham, during renovations in 2018. Note that both boots are for the left foot with one appearing to be for a woman and one for a child.

Footwear is occasionally found hidden under floorboards and in wall cavities. They are known as concealed shoes, and it is thought that they were hidden to ward off demons, ghosts and witches. It is also possible that they were hidden to bestow fertility on a female member of the household.

Northhampton Museum maintains a Concealed Shoe Index, which began in 2012.
