Tray, William Irvine General MerchantAbout this object
This is a complimentary tray from William Irvine General Merchant Edendale. Bill immigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 1916. In 1919, he established a bakery at Edendale which provided goods to Wyndham, Mataura, Seaward Downs and Menzies Ferry. In 1927 Bill opened a small second store in Wyndham, and over time built up a large business which expanded far beyond Edendale, catering for weddings, balls, dances and race meetings.
Bill Irvine remarked to a tradesman setting up a business in Edendale after World War Two, that the people of Edendale were 'a great crowd', noting that he could supply a years worth of bread and be assured of payment.
