Fur Stole, Brown Mink Shoulder CapeAbout this object
This brown mink fur shoulder cape was made by Mooneys (NZ) Ltd of Dunedin.
In New Zealand, the fur trade thrived, and Mooneys was famous for its fashion furs, being one of the main wholesalers selling into the main department stores and smaller furriers.
This firm was started in Dunedin in 1912 by George Stewart and James Kennedy Mooney as J K Mooney and Co. They traded and exported rabbit skins, and at its peak the company employed up to 20 trained crafts people. The firm changed hands several times, and eventually closed in 1998 as protests over the use of fur in the 1980s and 1990s led to a drop in sales worldwide.
