Subject and Association Description

Contains records of local places and conditions of roading as well as people employed as short-term contractors and other employees. The roadman worked as far as Taieri Ridge, Rock and Pillar, Gladbrook, Sutton and Moonlight road. Much time was spent crushing stones at the quarry at Garthmyl. A coal-operated crusher appears to have been used. The roadman therefore had to buy and get the coal carted, find temporary employees to operate the crusher and then to cart the crushed material to where needed. It is likely that some of this was used on the formation of Centre Road, when it became the main road.
