Building [Wainui School House]; 1878; 1969.199

Name/Title

Building [Wainui School House]

About this object

The old Wainui school was built in 1878, only a year after the first Compulsory Education Act was passed. Before that, schools were run by missionaries, which may explain the similarity in design of early schools and churches.
This building has sash windows with moulded architraves and extra mouldings above the windows outside. Another interesting feature of the building is the covered ceiling. You can see the square that the chimney flue once passed through. There was very little equipment in the early schools beyond a blackboard and a few maps and books. As this school was built in Wainui, a kauri timber district of the North, the main building material used was kauri.
