About this objectA poem called 'The Turf Club" is about a tale of woe, when a member of the 22nd Regiment of the NZ Army laid a charge against his ex-fiancee who broke her vow to him. Written and given to the said 'Regiment' by John Lawrence Balderston, of Kaiwaka, known as Lawrie, b 1921 d 2004. The ending of the poem reads..."From now to death , our only love SHALL BE THE GOOD OLD SPEIGHTS" (which was a beer from Otago, New Zealand)
