About this object
These objects are part of a large collection of works by Ian McMillan, of Auckland, that are loaned to Mangawhai Museum for an exhibition commencing in July 2019.
The objects include many ornate Waka Huia or feather boxes, large carved decorative pieces, patu, toki, putatara or shell trumpet, pounamu, tiki, and vessels of many sizes.
There is also a Waka Taua or war canoe approximately 2.4 metres long.
Some pieces are unfinished but the majority are beautifully carved items that reflect traditional Maori carving patterns.
Ian McMillian was born 1965 and died 2016. He spent the latter years of his life based at Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand. He used only hand tools to produce wood carvings that expressed Maori mythology
