About this object
A wooden chest with wood and iron battens on top and sides to protect the leather
surface. Two iron handles and a large lock on front. Labeled 'Union Line, passage to Auckland'. Four wheels on underside added later.
It has a removable shelf inside. There is an iron key for chest lock.
The chest came to Mangawhai with a relation to the donor aboard the 'SS Ruby'.
The 'SS Ruby' was built in 1876 and converted to a screw steamer in 1882. It was a regular trader until 31st March 1893, when the steamer was totally wrecked on the Mangawhai Bar with the loss of two lives.
