Writing Box - Bowmar Family; 21-99

Writing Box - Bowmar Family

About this object

Writing box, wooden, possibly mahogany, veneered, hinged with a keyhole of brass and blue velvet stuck to the underside.

The interior has a hinged maroon velvet - lined writing surface.
There are six compartments for writing materials, pens, ink etc.

This box belonged to Lilian Jane Bowmar, nee Abrams, b 1869.
Lilian lived at Kaiwaka on a farm named "Thornleigh", on the Mangawhai - Kaiwaka Road, (where Rural Design is today, belonging to the same extended family 2021).

The house where she lived was moved from its original site, where the Mangawhai Domain is now (2021) by bullock teams on a skidded road in the early 1900's.
The name "Thornleigh" derives from bush plantings of 'May' on the boundaries hedges.
