00.00 Introduction. PHYLLIS MAY WHARFE born 14 MAY 1913. Father ALFRED JOHN WHARFE, born NORTH ALBERTLAND 1866. He was FARMER, did PIT SAWING and GUM DIGGING.
02.10 Story of GUM DIGGING and NORTH ALBERTLAND PIONEERS. PORT ALBERT.
04.50 Father farmed, GUM DIGGING, STOCK farming, BUSH SICKNESS.
06.20 Grandfather moved to TARA. Father (ALFRED WHARFE) PIT SAWING TIMBER with brother WILLIAM WHARFE.
07.20 Description of house in TARA. Had cellar, made CHEESE.
08.10 WILLIAM WHARFE married age 21, and ALFRED WHARFE, given 21 shillings and land in NORTH ALBERTLAND. Grandparents (Unclear, may be grandparents of section owners) were RICHARDS.
09.25 Father bought section in MANGAWAI. TARA on VOLCANIC SOIL. FARMING described on TARA. EGGS, BACON. No REFRIGERATION.

13.55 PHYLLIS WHARFE’s mother was DORA CRUTCHER, born LONDON 1877, trained as NURSE. Came to New ZEALAND on the “NIAGARA”. Mother’s uncle was a MR WILSON from PAPAROA. Mother became COUNTY NURSE.
17.10 Father’s father was JOHN WHARFE, died age 70, born YORKSHIRE, lived DEVONPORT. House built with TIMBER from TARA. Arrived NZ on the MATHILDA ROTHENBURG in 1862.

16.25 RELIGION discussed. MANGAWAI CHURCH, MINISTER was was MR TREAGE. GOSPEL services at HAKARU, BAPTIST CHURCH in WHANGAREI. Mother (DORA CRUTCHER) took SUNDAY SCHOOL.
19.00 SUNDAY SCHOOL at KINGS RD described. Family prayers. Work on SUNDAYs discussed. Sunday activities. BLOOMFIELD family listened to service on WIRELESS. Saw CHARLIE WHARFE at TARA., went in BUGGY.
25.30 AUTOs discussed, long story. WINTLEs had first CAR. CRANK and SELF STARTER mentioned. Had MODEL T FORD. BATTERY, TYRE and CRANK. ROADSTER and FIVE SEATER differences.

04.00 DISTRICT NURSING after qualification. Went to BROADWOOD. Long story of arrival. Left on own. Worked with DOCTOR SMITH from RAWENE. Used COD LIVER OIL and VASELINE DRESSINGS.
07.50 There for 11 weeks. RAWENE had HOSPITAL.
09.15 Conference at RAWENE second trip. Lived in old house, described.
10.15 Had to run account at store. Took equipment with her.
11.30 Went to HIKURANGI. Had house there. INSPECTOR came during first trip. PETROL RATIONED.
12.40 DIPTHTHERIA IMMUNISATIONS. Home visits. Ran out of PETROL. Then to PIPIROA.
13.55 BROADWOOD for 3 months, then PLUNKET. Story of PRESERVES.
15.10 PLUNKET before MIDWIFERY. Went to TE KAO. DOCTOR WAS AT KAITAIA. DENTAL NURSE came occasionally. Had help in house.
17.40 CAPE REINGA during WW2, babies at LIGHTHOUSES. Description of accomodation. RATS and CHIMNEY smoked.
19.45 Home visit from BROADWOOD described. Went by BOAT, mother accompanied. Went by HORSE in winter, route given. TIDAL crossings described. Feeding HORSE.
24.00 Next went to DANNEVIRKE? (Difficulty remembering places.) WHANGAREI.
25.55 More NURSING Tasks. On call routine. Had enough MEDICATION in bags. Supplies from HOSPITAL. Doctor in KAITAIA. Some sent to KAITAIA HOSPITAL.
28.00 Rough timing of nursing positions. TE KAEO. Catching and feeding HORSE.

00.00 Travels continued. Went to GISBORNE, then TE PUNA, changed to? BAY. Earthquake damage to house. RIVER could flood. Went to ? then to TE KAHA.

SCHOOL at TE KAHA. DOCTOR came from OPOTIKI.
06.30 IMMUNISATION for TYPHOID.
06.50 Posted to GREAT BARRIER ISLAND. No DOCTOR. Went by boat. Stayed in boarding house, bach underneath. Description of landing.
08.10 Travelled by ROWING BOAT with equipment. Then had LAND ROVER. MAIL by boat once a week. MAORI area in CATHERINE BAY? then by HORSE.
10.35 Story of another visit. Fell off HORSE.
12.00 Visits to LIGHTHOUSE on island described. Went by DINGHY, WINCHED up rocks to LIGHTHOUSE uphill. Different landing places depending on weather.
15.05 Routine visits by BOAT monthly. Arranged with MARINE DEPARTMENT.
15.55 Had house on GREAT BARRIER near WHARF. PETROL FROM FORESTRY. ELECTRICITY in house, WOOD STOVE. New house had FRIDGE and garden. Used LAND ROVER. Sometimes HORSE.
18.15 Was on GREAT BARRIER for 7 years. Then did POST GRADUATE course. Next to DANNEVIRKE.
19.15 Candles and lamp with no electricity on GREAT BARRIER.
20.30 Worked in WARKWORTH? Then retired.
