01.20 Father had chemist shop. Lived behind shop.
01.50 Cycled around. Watched shorebirds at TE ARAI.
02.30 Parental support. Father bought telescope and binoculars age 15. Pierre Moncreiff’s book.
03.10 Attended WELLSFORD school then Whangarei Boys High School stayed with grandfather in KAMO. Books from library.
04.05 Bird watching after school and weekends. JEFF MOON vet in WARKWORTH. Father gave camera age 16
05.50 1950 met ROSS MCKENZIE WW1 veteran. Travelled widely in Chevrolet car bird watching.
07.20 Met ANN and JIM FRICKETT from BIRKENHEAD. Many weekends away. Age 18
08.15 Adult mentors. Scientific knowledge.
09.00 ROSS MCKENZIE lived CLEVEDON. SIMPSON (master at KINGS COLLEGE) discovered MIRANDA in 1940’s. SIMPSON had bird club at KINGS COLLEGE. SIMPSON cycled to KAIAWA
09.50 ROSS MCKENZIE took Gordon to CLEVEDON and MIRANDA.
10.30 Working as apprentice motor mechanic in WELLSFORD at GORDON’S GARAGE owned by MR GORDON. Bird watching as recreation.
12.10 IVAN TOMAS auto-electrician.
12.40 Met MAUREEN. She worked at TE HANA DAIRY COMPANY in office. Married in Auckland. 13.10 Lived in WELLSFORD 4 years then moved to AUCKLAND, business in WELLESLY ST repairing cars.
14.00 No time for birds till children older. 1970’s. Kept in touch with mentors and ornithological society.
15.30 Changes to bird watching members. SIMPSON retired, others younger.
16.20 Interest in shore birds 1950’s from ROSS MCKENZIE. FAIRY TERNS winter habits. No access to KAIPARA, no boat.
17.30 Confusion over FAIRY TERNS and LITTLE TERNS. Proved FAIRY TERNS in New Zealand in 1990 approx. On KAIPARA, no access to birds.
20.10 Banding of LITTLE TERN 15 years ago ( ? 1990’s)
20.40 1953/4 looked for FAIRY TERN, walked from TE ARAI to MANGAWHAI found nests in 1980’s. Few pairs. 3 to 5 pairs.
21.40 DEPARTMENT of CONSERVATION involved started predator control in 1980’s.
22.10 WAIPU site for FAIRY TERNS and PAKIRI and KAIPARA.
