A story called "A Composition"
Written by Charles Wharfe in 1897 when he attended Tara Road School.
The composition describes a journey on the ship 'Teviot' with Charles and his father, John Wharfe of the Tara, Mangawai. Charles is recalling his first trip to Auckland, eighty years ago (written in the first paragraph of the story)
Copied from the original which was a story written in a school exercise book belonging to Charles Wharfe.
Charles Wharfe b 1879 d 1965 married Iva Weir Wharfe nee Braddock in 1936.
Mangawhai Museum has a recording of Charles Wharfe's essay read by his son John Langley Wharfe eHive no. 21-43.
In 1897 Tara School was situated alongside the present day (2020) Tara Cemetery in the original parking area.

Richard Wharfe b 1809 D 1871 and Elizabeth Wharfe, nee Smith, known as Betty b 1806 d 1880, sailed with their family aboard the Matilda Wattenbach in 1862 to Auckland, New Zealand. They came to New Zealand as part of the Albertland Settlement Scheme.
