Other subjects covered was life in Auckland circa 1862, and afterwards in Port Albert, Kaipara District, schooling, Topuni Saw Mill which was owned by R Nicholson, surveying the Tauhoa Block in the Kaipara District with his father, transportation difficulties of the area, railway expansion to Wellsford, becoming a widower with 5 sons, selling the farm at Port Albert and moving to Auckland, religion at Port Albert, Methodist Church, Maori life on the Kaipara, marriage to Sarah Utting, nee Shepherd.
