Written by John Logan beneath the photographs, 'Mr Kirkwood. Gift of Mr R/Berney/Mr Charlie Huhnter./Gift of Mrs J Wilson/They blew up the rock in the channel of/the Catlins bar 1873'.

Written on the back, 'Mr R Berney told me that Mr C Hunter had mine experience at home... ...There was another man who was jealous and he got the blame for blowing up the dynamite which was stored in a vacant hut inside the bar on Berney's point. No one was killed or hurt must have been well planned. explosion heard in Kaitangata the post master rang up Mr G Dabinett for particulars./ J.L.'
