Photograph; a black and white studio portrait of Catlins World War One soldier,Sergeant Adam Francis. Handwritten on reverse: 'with best wishes, to H & B Parks, Sandy Bay, Otekura. Taken before Adam Francis went to the First World War'.
Adam farmed at Ahuriri Flat from 1905, won prizes at Owaka A & P Shows for the horses he bred and enlisted in 1915. He was over the age for active service and was assigned to be a cook at Sling Camp in England. Was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1920 in recognition of valuable service rendered during the war.

On his return he married a Miss Ridley, of Portobello, and is buried there.
He had purchased his farm at Sandy Bay from Josiah Elphinstone and felled most of the heavy bush with some help from his brother Bill. He sold to Harry Parks on 1st March 1911
