Photograph; a photograph from a newspaper article depicting the students of Tawanui School, 1912 and their teacher J G Johnston.
Printed caption reads 'Schools in Otago 80 years ago were sometimes a little basic. This one was at Tawanui in the Catlins Valley, South Otago, 16Km from Owaka. In the second row, third from the right, is Hilda Hawkes (nee Gwyn), now in her 86th year, but only seven when the photograph was taken in 1912. "Although it was a shocking place", writes Hilda, "I did receive a good sixth standard education (form two today)." '
Tawanui school closed December 21st, 1962.
