Scrap AlbumAbout this object
Large, dark maroon coloured Victorian scrapbook with gold and black floral design and writing "Album" on the front cover. The spine has black masking tape down the length due to previous damage and subsequent repairs. Inside the album are religious cards, quotes from the Bible as well as greetings cards dating from 1880 - 1903.
This particular album belonged to Maria Mills, the donor's great grandmother. Maria was born in Bradford, England in 1860 and was the eldest child of Joseph and Hannah Mills (nee Stow). Sometime before 1867 she sailed to New Zealand with her parents where another 9 children were born. By the age of 14, Maria had become a talented artist and her parents wanted to send her to Switzerland to pursue her aptitude for painting, but this did not eventuate.
Mary married Thomas Stevenson Drake in 1888 in Timaru and went on to have a family of four. Eventually this scrap album and another scrapbook were handed down through the generations and are now housed in the Whangarei Museum.
