Travelling Case
About this object
Black leather travelling Gladstone vanity bag inside a faded khaki green canvas cover. The inside of the bag has dark green fabric lining with separated compartments for various personal items.
The outer covering gives the impression that this item may have been used during war time and has a strip of leather onto one side with the inscription "B DAY" on it, possibly the original owner. When the bag was removed from the outer cover, it revealed two bag tags which were attached. One indicating the bag had travelled to London on the New Zealand Line "R.M.S Ruahine" in the name of Mrs B Perkinson. The other, a smaller brown ripped tag, which suggests the owner travelled from the United Service Hotel, Christchurch, where Ernest Boulton was the proprietor at the time.
Another much larger, red and blue travel tag is adhered to the underside of the case, this one revealing a Miss Ivy Smith travelled to Port Sydney on the "S.S. Maheno" in cabin 12, possibly staying at the "Cargin Private Hotel" 4 - 10 Eden Crescent, Auckland prior to departure.
Unfortunately who these people were, or when they travelled remains a mystery.
