Subject and Association Description

This artificial leg belonged to the late Mr Charles Manuel (1852-1914), a farmer from Motumaoho, a small settlement just outside of Morrinsville, and Chairman of the Piako County Council. He had his right leg amputated just above the knee in an operation performed by a surgeon on his kitchen table of the farm house in Motumaoho. Measurements were sent to New York and the left was dispatched in December 1913. There is little evidence that he wore the leg often as he died soon after receiving it.
