'Around Raglan' Chapter 21 says, "Dairying started in the Raglan district in 1899 when W. J. Smith, a progressive local businessman, built and operated a butter factory at Te Mata. It must have been profitable, because in 1902 Smith opened a factory opposite the Union Church . . . In 1905 Kauroa suppliers formed the Raglan Co-operative Dairy Co, bought the Kauroa creamery from Smith and commenced butter-making here. . . The Raglan factory was closed and I presume the churn and other equipment was transferred to Kauroa."
So the building to the left of the church is presumably the 1902 butter factory.
