About this objectSilver framed black and white photograph of the Presentation of Te Awataia's Taiaha to Old Settlers, 1957- by the last surviving grandson of Rev Wallis, to the people of Whaingaroa/Raglan.

Subject and Association DescriptionShortly after the death of Te Awaitaia on 27th April 1866, this taiaha was given to William Henry Wallis, the eldest son of the Rev, James Wallis, first Wesleyan Missionary to Raglan. The Taiaha remained in the possession of the Wallis Family until this presentation when the Taiaha was given back as a token of remembrance to Chief Te Awaitaia and in appreciation of his services in protecting the infant town and European settlement of Raglan from the ravages of the Waikato Wars of the 1860's.
