Ceremonial adze

About this object

This adze is thought to have held a ceremonial function due to the fine quality of its manufacture. It is part of a large collection of Māori taonga (treasures) known as the Willetts’ collection. This collection was found at the Waitaki River Mouth in the early 1950s. The adze and other taonga in the collection are believed to date to around the 14th century and are attributed to the Waitaha iwi (tribe).
