Portrait photograph of 13/178 Tpr. Thomas Davies Smellie Donaldson who served in WW1 with the Main Body, Auckland Mounted Rifles. Thomas was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1918. The citation in the London Gazette 28th March 1918 Page 3892 reads, ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack he displayed great gallantry by the manner in which he conveyed the wounded across a river during the retirement. He, with another man, under heavy fire, went out and brought back the whole of the wounded, swimming with them across the river. His gallantry and disregard were most marked.’
