North Auckland Mounted Rifles banner WW1

About this object

Embroidered North Auckland Mounted Rifles (NAMR) banner. Framed and mounted on a plywood backing then into a four inch kauri-rimu wood frame with a half inch gold insert. The banner was possibly made by a street merchant in Egypt for soldiers who wanted a souvenir to be sent back to New Zealand. The banner is a rectangle, green silk with pink braid and fringe at hem. In centre is a large horse shoe with a laurel wreath and a boars head inside, writing above and below reads in red, '11th North Auckland Mounted Rifles' 'Egypt 1915'. Above the boar 'XI KIA TUPATO NAMR'; translated, 11th Be Cautious (Maori Warning) North Auckland Mounted Rifles, the boar is their symbol. Birds are in each corner carrying Allies flags in their beaks, Belgium, NZ, France and England.
