Portrait of Father Antoine Garin S.M.About this object
A studio portrait of Father Garin (1810 - 1889), the first resident Catholic Priest in Nelson. He is wearing a black robe with white collar and a chain with amulets around his neck; his hat is placed on a red clothed table upon which he rests his right arm. He is holding a bible (with his finger marking a particular page) in his left hand.Maker

I don't think it's 'a chain with amulets around his neck' I've spent quite a bit of time with this painting and it's actually a crucifix partly obscured by his clothes. You can see Jesus's hand on the cross.
