1973 was an important year for Woollaston. His retrospective, "M.T. Woollaston: Works/1933-1973" opened at the Manawatu Art Gallery under Luit Bieringa. This popular exhibition then toured the country throughout 1974.
Woollaston painted a commission of the Remarkables in 1972. He had been to see them for the first time in October 1971. Woollaston painted three Queenstown area oil commissions between 1972 and 1974.
