New Zealand Portrait Gallery

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery was founded in 1990 as a charitable trust whose focus is on portraiture of and by New Zealanders. It showcases work in a variety of media, in both historical and contemporary genres. It mounts a regular programme of exhibitions in Shed 11, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington Waterfront. It also maintains a programme of lectures, seminars and portrait exhibitions.

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery aims to extend the boundaries of what has traditionally been regarded as portraiture, to include video and audio portraits as well as the latest explorations in presenting identity. The role of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery is to provide the visual record of our cultural and historical heritage in a way that defines the significance of past history as well as current condition.
