About this object
Meteorological report book; a small black book with a white sticker on the front with the hand-written text '1928 / October 25 to [?]'. Written on the inside front cover is 'Meteorological / Note Book / Ophir (Alt 1000ft.) / Central Otago / New Zealand / October 24, 1928 / to / Alexander Don / Observer'. Pre-printed headings are noted on each page for times, barometer readings, temperatures, rainfall etc. These are completed in handwritten text by the Reverend Don. The last entry is dated Friday 6 December 1928.

Alexander Don was a Presbyterian minister and missionary, well known for his work with the Chinese gold miners of Central Otago in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Don retired to Ophir in 1923 where he kept meteorological records on behalf of the Met Office. This role was taken over by the postmistress on his death in 1934. Don's observations were taken in his garden at The Bungalow, just down the road from the Ophir Post Office.
