About this object
Five buttons from the uniform of Major John Butterill Ariell of Thorne, Paparoa N.Z. He was a Sgt. Maj. in the Otamatea Mounted Rifles under Col. Colbeck before WW1. When WW1 came around J.B. Ariell tried to join the New Zealand forces going to war but was turned down, so he paid his own way to England where he was accepted into the 2nd Surrey Regt. known as the 'Queens Own'. 1-2. Gold metal crowns with red velvet backing. 3-5. Diamond shaped buttons with green and red enamel wreaths and mottos.
